We appreciate your sharing about the Black Pearl. That car is some
kind of STRAIGHT! Dark colors, ESPECIALLY black, show up any little
flaw or imperfection more than any other. I SEE NONE!

Now, would you please tell us about the two blonde pearls (the pretty
lady on the left and the white 350ZZZ)? I suspect they must also have
some place in your life............................

Yeah, it's pretty much a rule of thumb ~ take a picture of a Z car and there'll be a pretty gal somewhere in the picture!

For those new members who might not be aware, this is the "BLACK PEARL" 280Z. Datsun only did this once, as an experiment in 1978 to test the American market for an all-black sportscar. Before the BP, if you wanted a black Z, you had to repaint one.

The Pearl was a standard 1978 280Z, but with a special appearance package (SAP) which included rear hatch louvers, special wheels, special mirrors, etc. A very intricate 2-or-3-color accent pinstripe outlined every edge of the car, and covered the once-only (1978) lead-based Metallic Black Pearl paint.

Datsun didn't manufacture these cars in order. When one was demanded from the showroom, the next 280 coming down the assembly line was diverted into the Black Pearl process. Hence, the VIN numbers for these cars are not sequential. And because Datsun refuses to release sales figures for the BP (if they even kept them), we have no precise idea how many were made. (Only about two thousand at most).

The price on these collectables makes them well worth counterfeiting, and it's not uncommon to find attempts at doing that. The lead-based paint can no longer be duplicated in this country (altho it could be available in Europe) and the radiator-mounted paint decal is hard to find nowdays. Also, the 3M pinstripe kit will cost you over $1,000 today ~ IF you can find one.

Buyers should ALWAYS beware of possible fraud when buying a BLACK PEARL from an unknown source. You can end up in grief, with a common 280Z hacked up to look "sort of" like a real BP.

Ross Williams owns one BP, and is the PreZident of the Black Pearl club here in the USA.

The CTZCC has four of these BP cars among our members' 500+ Z cars, one of which is unfit for photos.

Certainly one of the rarest Zs ever made.

Very nice and highly desirable, Pete. And your lady caught our eye, too!

Frank

*(Pete, I'm moving this great Post out of this Forum, into the GENERAL Z DISCUSSION Forum. This Z Photo Gallery is reserved for historic photos of "other peoples'" Datsuns, not our own).

Oh, Madonna Mia, what have I started now? Me and my bocca grande
(bigga mouth)! EVERYBODY should have a wife that looks that dorky!
Tell her I said so! And I think I have room to judge, I am also married
to a "bianca piccola" (little blondie) who hasn't damaged any cameras
in her time. My second bianca piccola is a little Yellow Labrador female
named Honey. But no yellow Z Cars, even though that is my favorite
color on a car.

BTW Come se nome tuoi sposa? What's your wife's name? She is
welcome to participate, too! The only thing that made me laugh is her
response. I can hardly wait to see your next round of pix; she will
probably be looking like Miss (Mrs.?) America!

Sorry did not have any pictures of my wife and my Z's all alone. This is a picture of my wife (Jill) and I at Val Skinners Golf Tournament at Haig Pointe Island off Hilton Head in South Carolina. NOW you know what the "Mystery Women" and Pete look like....

OK, she's a doll. She deserves Zs.

But she's too young for me. All my girls have to be at least 21.

Pete, great car! I had the pleasure to take seat in Ross' Black Pearl Beauty in North Haven. First time I saw a 280 BP personally. Breathtaking.

Take care!

Just wanted to reiterate how gorgeous your Black Pearl is. Congrats on having such a rare beauty in immaculate shape! Obviously the 350 is stunning as well..

Could you give us a little more info about the BP, such as how long you've owned it, how many miles it has, if it's ever been restored, etc.? Curious minds want to know! :D
