We always focus on the lowest VIN, and for good reason, but what about the highest VIN or the LAST Z produced for that model/year?

Any input appreciated!

Based on my mining of the FAST VIN database, the last 81 turbo Z was VIN number 608101, manufactured late 8/81.

My Z is VIN 606859 manufactured on 8/17/1981.

Nothing official here, just observations over a 40-year period.
Each of these represents the highest VIN I have personally seen
(or been made aware of by competent authority).

240Z coupe: HLS30-172040 (7/73)
260Z coupe: RLS30-067970 (11/74)
260Z 2+2: GRLS30-17122 (11/74)
280Z coupe: HLS30-281323 (11/75) misplaced records for 76-up
280Z 2+2: GHLS30-33441 (11/75) misplaced records for 76-up

Sorry for the incomplete data, but at least it gets us started.

Dave, amazing in a sense that you should introduce this topic. For
some time I have given thought to searching for (and acquiring) the
highest-VIN 240Z coupe. As I pointed out in another thread, I have
nowhere further to go in a downward direction. But I thought it would
make for an interesting exhibit at car shows, if I could display the
first and last of the breed right next to each other.

So thanks, pal, you're a real buddy. Now that you've re-infected
me with that bug, I'll have to start another search and shuck out some
more cash. Not just for the late-73 Z, but also for the 6-speed diesel
duallie with a 2- or 3-Z trailer it would take to haul them around!

Oh, well, what are IRA's for but to enjoy retirement life?

What a nice set of "bookends" you would have if you found the last 240Z. Let's help find it! Thanks for that info.

Thanks, Carl. So so far those are the highest known/published VIN Z cars.

Is there a Nissan official document showing the actual last car's VIN for each category?

Mike,

Most auto manufacturer's model years did not follow the calendar year back in the 60's, 70's and probably 80's. Most new models were introduced in September, so the end of the prior model year was August.

About right Mike ~ but this is a topic of much controversy.

I argue, based upon Datsun books I've read over the years, that the "1970 model year" went from 01Oct69 to 30Sep70.

I contend that any 240Z made on or after 01Oct70 was technically a '1971 model year' car. That theory supports my contention that there were only 'about' 10,000 (some say 12,000) 1970 240Zs made. About 7,000 of them were delivered to the USA (the primary target market for the car).

There were some really confusing events taking place at the end of 1970 tho, which caused MANY cars, delivered after 01Oct70, to be titled as 1970 cars. The reverse applied, too ~ some 1970 cars were titled as 1971 models. The actual physical differences btwn the 70 and 71 cars were very few and very slight. You could easily swap a few parts from one to the other and make it look like the opposite year. The only thing you couldn't change was the VIN number. They are both considered to be "series-1" cars

You will no doubt hear a LOT of arguments in the next few posts, disagreeing with this theory. I've heard most of them, and some of them come from Z authorities whom I respect deeply. I remain convinced that the 1970 240Zs numbered about 10,000, and that the model technically ended on 30Sep70. (My mind's made up ~ don't confuse me with facts!)

Bear in mind that I have a vested interest in promoting my argument. My April 1970 240Z is 'worth more' if it is one of the few remaining 1970 cars.

(Not that I'd sell it for any price, no matter what was offered . It's mine.
Again.
Amen).

Frank

Funny enough, the orange rustbucket was a very late production '72 240Z, although I *think* it might have been titled as a '73. Have to double check on that. I do remember that the production date on the door plate was late enough that it was worth noting.

It would actually be a 260z then Mike...... (240+280)/2 = 260....

In support of Frank's theory, my car is titled as a '71. I wish it was titled as a '70 but at least nothing can change the Series 1 designation! :D
