In my search for a 240Z I found an inspector in the LA area ($200), and in the San Francisco area ($200), and an open transportation guy. (LA/San Francisco to Ct. for $750

That's the best cross-country transport price I've ever heard of. I suspect you might find (at that price) that the guy loads your car and then sits around for a few weeks, waiting to gather other cars coming this way.'

Did you ask if they have a guaranteed delivery date? Sounds too good to be true.

Yes, I received a delivery date. $200 deposit, balance on delivery.

Hi Irv,
Frank is right. As the saying goes, "You can't beat that with a stick."
I've heard of rates like that coming in from the midwest, Chicago for
example. Even if it does take a little extra time while the guy gets a
load together, and even if the car doesn't travel in an enclosed trailer,
I haven't heard of anything better. Personally, if the contractor (owner/
/operator?) is reputable, and the groundwork is laid (the inspection is
successful), I would grab that deal in about 6 microseconds or less.

I've shipped about five 240Z's now on open transports. Two with OK results and three with less than satisfactory results. I'm beginning to wonder if it is possible to get a car though that process without it suffering shipping damage. Nothing major, but disappointing dings, dents and scratches on the cars when they arrived - that were not in the detailed pictures taken before shipping.

If you do have damage - you might as well forget about collecting anything from the insurance carrier without taking them to court.. it's a joke.

Not to be a wet blanket - but if the car is very nice at all - I'd recommend paying the extra money up front - and having it shipped in an enclosed trailer, by people that appreciate classic cars... even if they aren't perfect.

If it's a parts car - no problem.. The sweetness of a low price is quickly lost to the bitterness of paying to correct additional damage, after a six month document battle with the "insurance" people..

FWIW,
Carl B.

I really can't disagree with anything you said, Carl. And obviously with
your breadth of experience I respect and appreciate your sharing that.

My frame of reference was twofold: (1) Unable to discern the car in
detail, my assumption was it's an average car and (2) new cars on a
"portable parking lot" are virtually always unmarked when they arrive
at a dealership. Not always, that is why we inspect them very care-
fully when they are offloaded to make sure they are perfect. But in
those rare cases of damage (however slight) we annotate the documents
for insurance purposes.

My further assumption is that the same process would be used by a
private individual; the driver's documentation should record any dents,
dings, scratches, or whatever, that existed before loading to exonerate
him from liability.
