If buying a car out of state that has no title. But does have the previous owner registration.

What issues might CT DMV throw at you.

Thanks Pat

I would make sure the title is not being held by a lien holder. Does the seller have a story why it is missing?

I looked on the CT DMV website and did not find anything specific to your question.

Quickest thing I can think of is their Title Search, which took nearly 30 days and cost $55 last time I checked. Then they generate a title for you (called "Lost Title Restoration" or something like that), which requires you to physically bring the car to the inspection station at DMV for a VIN verification. If you dont have a trailer you can actually get a Temp Registration in some cases, which lets you actually drive an untitled car to DMV for this verification ~ pretty stupid if you ask me.

They will ask you for a notarized Bill of Sale and the previous owner's signature on the old registration, releasing the car to you.

You must have hard proof of who you are and where you live and a fat wallet.

Be careful you don't wind up receiving stolen property. Cars without paperwork or keys are always suspicious ~ and you have better things to do with your life for the next 5-8 yrs than making license plates for other people!!!

how old of a car?

if over 25 years old...no title needed in CT...but they will require a bill of sale and verify the vin number in person at the DMV.

The car I'm looking at is a 1971.

Dang, Pat! You're the best husband I've ever even HEARD of!!!

I'm lucky if I can get my wife to make me macaroni for a holiday! :(

What state is the car in? Would the seller be willing to do a title search and reconstruction in HIS state, so you get the benefit of a clean sale?

It would be sad if you got the car all the way to CT and the title search shows it stolen. Then you'd lose the car and you'd be trying to get your money back from the seller, who would be more interested in hiring a defense attorney at that time.

Could get sticky.

*(Happy Valentine's Day, sweetheart! I bought you a stolen car!)

NY.

This is a e-mail I got from the seller.

I have the registration with the information filled out on the back from the previous owner just like a title. When i purchased the car I asked him about the title, and he told me that because of the age of the car - there was no title, that you just keep the registration and sign it over in a similar fashion to a modern day title to register the vehicle at the dmv. I asked a few people about it before I bought the car, and they confirmed it ( never had a car that old ) hope the info helps

I brought in a 240Z from Virginia a few years ago and got a physical VIN check at the DMV but I don't remember a state inspection. They wanted me to hand over the VA plates but I wouldn't because they were vintage ones so they let me keep them. I can't remember if they needed my title, but my memory is hazy.

CT also has an honor system when you buy a car out of state and bring it into CT.....you are expected also to pay CT the sales tax you paid in the state you bought the car in. I think it's only on new cars, does it ever get paid? Hmmmm.

in new york any car older than i think 1973 has a reg. only. after '73 the car has a title. on the back of the reg. is a spot for the new owner to fill his name and there is a spot for the seller to sign his name. you will need a bill of sale and it would be nice to get the old owner to put his s.s. number on the bill of sale. if you want to get crazy take him to a notory to have it all legal eagle.
