Our Chicago member Tengu sends us this list of recent BARRET -JACKSON auction prices for several models of the Z car.

Of interest to me is that they couldn't find a 1970 car to sell! :D

I hope the links all work, so you can zee pictures of what these cars are looking like at these prices:

Here are the 240/60/80Z cars listed at the Barrett-Jackson auto auction site as having been sold by them in the past.

Listed in order of price sold (note: prices include 10% commission fee).

$23,100
1971 240Z
See details and photos here:
http://www.barrett-jackson.com/applicat ... pop=0&it=1

*(This car has the engine dressed like my own, but has pretty radical big wheels and a front snowplow. Not too sure how he managed to squeeZe "250hp" out of that stock-looking engine [big cam and compression?], but his shock tower brace is mounted backwards).

$17,000
1977 280Z
See details and photos here:
http://www.barrett-jackson.com/applicat ... pop=0&it=1
*(Highly modified 280, w/corvette V8 and G-nose. I DO like the way he has cut the rear bumper down into Nerf bars ~ that might be an improvement on the original car design! He probably has far more invested in this car than he's getting back for it).

$16,500
1973 240Z
See details and photos here:
http://www.barrett-jackson.com/applicat ... pop=0&it=1
*(Not too sure exactly what "racing wheels and exhaust" are ~ they appear to be standard 5-slots and maybe ANSA exhaust tips. For that matter, I'm not real sure who Bob "Sharpe" is!)

$13,475
1972 240Z
See details and photos here:
http://www.barrett-jackson.com/applicat ... pop=0&it=1
*(Ahhhh ~ a nice, original Z. Not carved up or modified, except for the twin JC Whitney mirrors. I suspect on a better day this car could have pulled closer to $15,000).

$12,925
1972 240Z
See details and photos here:
http://www.barrett-jackson.com/applicat ... pop=0&it=1
*(I personally dislike the graphics and that funky steering wheel. I am surpriZed that he still claims a modest 151hp after tripling his induction with the Webers. Price seems about right to me).

$11,770
1972 240Z
See details and photos here:
http://www.barrett-jackson.com/applicat ... pop=0&it=1
*(This looks like a very nice resto on an original car ~ worth that price, I feel).

I happened to catch one of these sales recently during Christmas break reruns season. I have to admit that I did a double take when a very clean silver 260Z rolled onto the stage.

I find it interesting that B-J has only accepted Z-Cars that are largely modified or radical. I have never seen a stock restoration or survivor car at their auctions.

About 5 years ago Brock Yates was an expert commentator for B-J on Speed. A 240Z (probably one of the ones Frank lists) went QUICKLY across the block and Yates' observation was that the 240Z was a landmark car that has never really taken off in value. His reasoning was that "there were simply too many of them, you see them everywhere".

Now of course, people are beginning to realize that they "are not everywhere", especially 240Zs. The values in recent years is trending upward and I believe it will continue to do so.

B-J also only accepts #1 or MAYBE #2 condition cars. Not too many 240Zs in that condition being made available for sale.

Jags, old Porsches and Hemi cars have had their day in the sun already and their values have leveled off considerably. Japanese sports cars as a whole will have their day soon, and the Z will lead the way.

My 2 centZ.

Interesting thread.

Maybe part of the high price on the burgundy '71 is that someone thought
it was a real 5-speed Fairlady (see fender badges) with a 6-cylinder
transplant. At first I thought so too, because I thought I saw the steering
wheel on the R/H side of the car (L/H as we are looking at the picture).
But upon closer inspection I noticed the steering wheel just barely poking
above the dash on the Export side. Badges can be deceiving!

The '77 280Z must be an interesting car. According to the writeup it has
either a 6-cylinder or a Corvette 8-cylinder, depending on which portion
of the writeup you choose to believe.

On the yellow '72 with graphics, I have a hard time understanding why
the owner went to the expense of triple Webers but stayed with the 4-
speed instead of going to a 5-speed. I would have reversed those
priorities (he only reached the first). To each his own, I guess!

But the most interesting car of all was the last one, the orange '72,
which sold for big bucks despite having no cylinders and no engine size
(see writeup)!
