Colin and I headed up to the VSCCA MT Equinox VT Hill Climb event Friday. Beautiful weather for the Saturday/Sunday weekend event. Datsun was well represented with Bruce and his brother in the two Roadsters.
A five-mile, adult roller coaster that climbs 3200 feet.
Attached a few photos, plus one of Tom Cotter (Yes, that Tom Cotter) launches the vintage B production Corvette up the hill...Whoa Nelly.

Very cool! I love that #11 silver Datsun roadster. What a beauty!

Was it super hot up in VT like it was here in CT?

It was very comfortable...Just about where these photos were taken, about a mile up the road, I could have used a sweater.

Now that we are officially 50yrs old, I'll bet a 240Z would do very well in this class.

Frank, we had a conversation with one of the VSCCA Officials at the Equinox event.
SCCA ran the event up until 1973, VSCCA has run it since. The cut off date for VSCCA is 1960.
1960 up until 1965 would have to be reviewed. However, possibly, for this event only they would allow a Datsun 240Z to run if you can show a 240Z ran before 1973. No trick stuff, no race rubber...
So Frank, your mission is to find photos, results, entry lists etc...They would still have to review the car, they have very strict entry rules, so don't hold your breath. However, I'm thinking of running the "Preservation" class in the TR.

So all they need is proof that a Z ran in the SCCA sanctioned hillclimb events prior to the end of 1973??

Would that open the gates for 240Zs to run the hills under VSCCA events?
Would I be a Z hero to the USA if I can prove this?

So I guess those two Datsun roadsters that entered raced hills previously to 1973 and can prove it?? Weird requirement :?

Frank,
SCCA Hillclimb at Equinox ONLY.
For this hillclimb event they might allow a Datsun 240Z to run if you can show a 240Z ran this event before the end of 1973 at Equinox.
No trick stuff, no race rubber...
No gates would open, they are super strict on cars built after 1960 -1965. There is no specific list of eligible cars. Members are encouraged to submit 1959 through 1965 cars to the Car Classification Committee to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
The regs:
https://www.vscca.org/about-us/eligible-post-war-cars
John, the two roadsters are probably close enough.

Well no John; as I understand it that TYPE of car must have raced under SCCA hillclimb prior to 31Dec73. The individual cars aren't required to have that history. Also, it sounds as if those two would be disqualified under VSSC rules because they are dedicated racers now, no longer street cars?

My buddy and I ran our stock Healeys uphill once (Hogsback Hill in central NYS) under SCCA rules, so today any stock Bugeye or 100-4 Healeys should be qualified to climb under today's VSSC rules.

Do I understand that right?

Frank T

Ahh, just read your explanation; we were typing together.

So this requirement only applies to Equinox. Thanks.

Excellent video, my favorite type of racing to watch :D . Frank, please repost this as a possible fun run to LRP this fall, Sept. 30 or Oct.1.

Hi Folks,

Great photos. I ran the #11 Datsun and my brother Bruce the #231. It's a really fun event. The run can be fast, challenging and hairy. 5 miles, 3000 feet vertical and 13 turns some of which are hairpins. Max speed over 92 MPH on top of saddle. I ran a 5:05 with a max speed of 87 MPH on street tires. I'd love to run my 240Z race car to give the Lotus some pressure. Just need to prove it ran this hill prior to 1973 or strong arm the event organizer.

Top 10 times:

1 254 Mitchell JR 60 Lotus 4:47.32
2 197 Vapaa Stefan 68 Saab 4:52.47
3 113 Donick Micheal 51 Allard 4:58.18
4 37 Vapaa George 59 Lotus 5:01.88
5 33 Cotter Tom 64 Corvette 5:03.60
6 11 Giedra Devin 65 Datsun 5:05.30
7 1 Bragg Ben 35 Ford 5:17.47
8 231 Giedra Bruce 68 Datsun 5:18.88
9 717 Greenberg Andy 63 Aston 5:26.54
10 80 Goodson III James 60 MGA 5:29.59

Regards, Devin

Wow, only about 45 seconds time difference across the entire top 10 finishers.
I have to believe a good Z would place well into the upper half of that pack.

It seems we have to acquire access to Equinox Hill's old SCCA record archives to find a Z ever having been involved in this. Even a single car should be enough.

(Wish I could have watched that Allard beat the Corvette time! )
PS: Appreciate that bumper sticker on Bruce's Roadster
