 I just got word from Barnes & Noble that they will no longer carry Nissan Sport Magazine!!  Now I don't know what I'm going to do. Apparently we can't order specific editions of any magazine thru B&N.
If I miss out on this issue, I'm gonna be really upset.

Is Nissan Sport in trouble? They have significantly downsized the last few issues. Now printing/distribution problems as well? Strange. |

I've been wondering the same thing John. This is a difficult business climate for the printed publications industry. I know of numerous magazines that have gone under recently. I was thrilled when Nissan Sport picked up my 6 year subscription to SportZ when they folded! I hope our suspicions don't come true. |

I managed to find about a dozen copies of this issue at two Barnes & Noble bookstores ~ bought 'em all. Great article with good photos and extensive credits for nearly a dozen of our CTZCC members, by name. Wonderful work, NISSAN SPORT! Thank you for such good coverage of this important event!!! Well Rick, your little Lucky 13 now has national press coverage. You have sat on this car diligently for more than 30 years, like a protective mother hen, preserving it from the elements because you KNEW how special it was. I can only imagine your lonely sentinel all those years, thinking you were the only person who really appreciated the car for what it was. Now that the world knows this very-important 240Z is still intact and has been well preserved over the decades due to your quiet diligence, how do you feel? |

Hey Rick and Frank! Congrats on the article in Nissan Sport Mag.! I didn't expect to see it in the magazine. I have been following some of the logs and pics so I knew about "Lucky 13". I coundn't believe it when I saw it on the cover. I'm proud to be a member of CTZCC! |

This whole event has been pretty staggering for me, and very exciting for most others in the Club. I feel especially happy for Rick, who thought nobody else appreciated the importance of his car for more than 30 years. It must have been a very lonely experience. But not any more! He can have as much attention and interaction with other Z fanatics as he can handle, now! 
I hope he decides to show the car at many places around the country during 2010, so everyone can enjoy it. And I'm really glad NISSAN SPORT choZe to show the car exactly as it was found ~ dust, spider webs, and all. Just exactly the way it looked the day Rick first showed it to me. Thanks for your great comments and support. |

Dadgum it Frank, lookit what you got me into now! If it wasn't for you................ Actually, this is all very humbling, considering it only came about as a result of my CURIOSITY and GREED. Allow me to explain. Beginning probably in 1971, I developed a FASCINATION for low VIN numbers, especially on Zs. Our original car was (is) #06289, which back in the day was nothing exceptional. But in the Conn. 240Z Club, as it was called back then, were Atty. Norm Cohen (#409), Fredi and Bob Fenster (#418), and Dottie and Joe Novak (#965). Observing this made me CURIOUS as to where other low-VIN number Zs might be, and during which months they were manufactured. So I began a spreadsheet on 5x8 cards to attempt an accounting, which I pursue to this day. This FASCINATION, which had become an OBSESSION, was only kindled by the fact that another friend, Dave Mathewson, was the original owner of XKE Jaguar #38. But that was only the beginning. In Aug 1973 Roy Burnette, a Club member, asked me to help him find a nice used Z so his wife Penny could also drive one. I knew of one for sale in Manchester and while helping Roy negotiate the purchase of that pretty green Z, I was shocked to notice it was VIN #171. So when Roy calculated that he couldn't really afford to buy it, I HAD TO HAVE IT (GREED), as it was the lowest VIN Z I had seen up till that time. I bought the car on Aug 24, but the OBSESSION only got worse (MORE GREED). I began a search to acquire the lowest-VIN Z I could find. But being in one corner of the country and already owning #171, this was not going to be an easy task. By 1976 I had assisted George Panko in the purchase of one of the Fensters' Zs, the #418 car. In Aug 1976 George brought my attention to a classified ad for a Z in a national automotive publication. When I discovered it was #13, which by then I had noticed in the Datsun Factory Parts and Service manuals was where the product line began, MAJOR GREED set in. I was DETERMINED to own that car WHATEVER THE COST (MAXIMUM GREED). On 30 Aug 1976, in Raleigh NC, papers were signed, money changed hands, and Lucky 13 came home with me to CT. What you saw at the car show and what you see pictured in the magazine is exactly what I brought home that day. Nothing has been replaced, nothing has been changed, with the exception of the bath and vacuuming that Dave Calabrese (owner of Middletown Nissan) insisted that I allow his people to do in preparation for the show. I actually was going to display it as a true barn find-- dust, cobwebs, and all, but............ My OBSESSION AND ITS ASSOCIATED GREED for acquiring the lowest- VIN Z possible has now vanished for obvious reasons. But if nearly 40 years later my fondness for "things Z" hasn't disappeared, I guess it never will. I hope not!-- look at all the great people with like interests, maybe even FASCINATIONS or OBSESSIONS, it has brought into my life! More later. All Z Best,.........................Kathy & Rick |

I just have to say...if someone ever wants to know all about car #13 it's all here on this thread. Imagine if this type of inside story and details were so readily available for all low-vin collector car discoveries! What interesting reading of contributions directly from the owner and other Datsun afficionados and authorities (like Carl Beck, Jim Frederick, John Taddonio and others). This is an international story with its epicenter right here in our little state. We should all be proud and thrilled to have been a part of this major event for our club. Without the efforts of Chris (Phrog), Frank and of course kathy and Rick, car #13 would still be unknown and we wouldn't have a national magazine cover to our credit. What an amazing story! |

Great story, Rick! I actually hope this new-found exposure will help flush-out your old friends from Z-Years-Past. We have been unsuccessful so far in locating your old Z-buddies thru the internet. Once anyone is bitten by the Z-Bug, there is no cure, so your friends are still Z-oriented. Maybe someone reading this will know your old friends and alert them to your quest. The 're-finding' of Lucky 13 is a landmark event for the CTZCC, and is of historical importance to every Z lover in this country. But on a personal note, I am very happy that you are FINALLY getting some reward and recognition for faithfully keeping this great old car intact and safe all these years, even when you felt nobody else even cared. In one of the Indiana Jones stories, I remember a Templar Knight who dedicated his life to guarding the Holy Grail in a remote mountaintop cave, until Jones tracked it down and located it. You remind me of that scenario ~ not "QUITE" as old as that Knight, but your dedication sure seems to fit the story. THANK YOU, Rick Morgan, for quietly safeguarding a very important piece of history for all those years, even when you thought you were alone in your appreciation for it. Having grown to know you as an individual, I recogniZe that profit was never your motive. Your simple love for theZe carZ was your inspiration. I salute you, Sir. Frank |
