Marc, remind me to shake your hand extra hard next time we meet.

I couldn't agree more. There were only about 10,000 1970 Z cars made (Oct69-Sep70). Of those, the USA got about 7,000 of them. Of those, most are dead today.

I suspect (uneducated guess) that there might be about 4,000 1970 cars left in the world today. Of those, probably fewer than 2,000 of them are intact originals ~ meaning unmodified.

Clive has been hit with the lucky stick. The car he found is about as close to original as you can reasonably expect to find today (Unless you're Jersey Joe!).

I still have fantasies of getting him good and drunk and talking him into selling me the car.

Frank

Just to be a tech geek on the subject...

Bear in mind that Series I 240z's were produced until about January of '71. Mine was produced 10/70 (#11137)...it all depended on how the dealer titled the cars as to whether they were 70 or 71.

Great info on this stuff is posted here:

Cheers,
Colin

Yeah ~ I'm talking Production Year, as recogniZed by the factory. Lots of mushy stuff happened at the end of the 1970 production year, when demand for this great little car far outstripped Datsun's intended production figures and delivery ability.

Some dealers had ordered 1970 cars which didn't arrive until after the '70 production year was long gone, but because the buyer had placed deposits on the car during 1970, the cars got titled as '70s. Others preferred to have their '70s titled as "new" '71s and got that wish, too.

Some of the 1970 cars failed to pass Quality Control and were "kept after school" until everything was made right. Some of those weren't released until 1971 ~ and titled as '71 cars.

Good example here ~ a summer 1970 car, delivered to the USA in the spring of 1971, titled as a 1971 240Z:
