Frank: as I have said numerous times in the past, and it certainly bears repeating
right here: you really seem to have missed your "calling." I am convinced that you
should have become a journalist, rather than a Marine. If you HAD to become a
Marine, you would have received numerous awards and decorations for having been
A MARINE CORPS JOURNALIST!! Great job. I never tire of your reporting.

And Phil described the feeling well, too: I also felt like I was in that seat beside you,
if not driving myself! I'm not sure that it was only 34 years ago, though-- had you
already owned your Z for 9 years by that time? I would have thought it to be more
like 44 years ago, unless you were back in Hawaii for a subsequent tour of duty....

['I'm not sure that it was only 34 years ago, though--'] Well, when I wrote the story in 2008, it had been 34 years since I had seen the Ferrari. It's been 40 years, now.

In the late 70's I worked with a man named Ken Gross who had just bought a 275GTB. He wanted it so much that he knew he couldn't responsibly negotiate the price, and sent his wife to buy it. Ken went on to be the motoring contributor for Playboy Mag and curator of the Petersen Car Museum in CA. He wrote a book on the Ferrari 250 GT SWB.
As much as I wanted a 275, I was young and buying a house, etc., etc.
Ken told me to get a 250 GT, which could be had for a little north of $10k then! I was wary of buying a money pit and opted for buying my 280ZX which looked a little like the 275GT if I used my imagination. Certainly didn't sound like a Ferrari V-12 though.
As much as I have enjoyed the Z, it really was one of those could have, should have moments in life. Just like the house in Kensington, Apple at $7, oh well! At least I went on to enjoy the ZX for 33 years knowing that I would have definitely had to succumb to the temptation to sell off the Ferrari 20 years ago.

Yup!
When I was a teenager, brand-new Cobras and XK-E fixed-head coupes were less than $6,000.
But you could build a new starter home for $15k.
New Ferraris always seem to have the same cost as a new home in whatever era you look at.
Someday when we've conquered time travel, I'll empty out my bank account and return to 1962. I'll save you a seat.

While words can help paint a picture in someone's mind, a video is worth a million words. Here's our local Skip Barber, race instructor and owner of Lime Rock Park Raceway, tooling around Connecticut in a Ferrari 275GTB almost identical to the one I drove in Hawaii.

https://youtu.be/riDDsnh3vDw

Speed was rather smooth and effortless in this Ferrari; I really didn't feel like I was doing 95 in the tunnel. When the guy passed me door to door, I backed off and he shot ahead like a slingshot, leaving the tunnel ahead of me. That's the only time I got the sensation of speed, when I had another car (my Z) to judge against. It was a little frightening to realize we had been going 100 (him faster), that close to each other, confined in a tube.
