As I am sure most of you know ALL 240Z thru 280ZXs are eligible for Antique/Vintage Auto Insurance. Next year the first generation ('84s) 300s will be eligible. I have mine covered thru J.C. Taylor (I think its by a bigger fish now) and although the coverage has some restrictions it works well for me. My annual policy runs me $472 for three of my registered Datsuns. The policy is a complete collision, liability, glass, towing etc. etc. I have had only one experience to use it when while parked at a friends shop it (510 Wagon) was backed into and one of its quarter panels was crunched(all the way into its interior panel) by an 17 year old in pops pickup truck  . JCT did all the legwork and within 30 days or so I had a check for $2,500. :D Thank You JCT. If anyone is interested please feel free to contact me.

What a coincidence, I was just looking over a Hagerty quote for my 81 280zxt. It is currently insured by an Allstate speciality car coverage, but it does not have an agreed to value.

They don't require an appraisal under a $25K value. They do require pics of four sides and a cursory description of the vehicle. As far as restrictions are concerned, they of course don't expect that it is going to be used as a daily driver i.e. you must have at least one other reregistered vehicle. I think if you GOOGLE antique auto insurance it should come up or plug in www.jctaylor.com it also might come up :? . Its been some 10 years since I signed up with them and I just get my annual bill and cut them a check and I am good for another year. If you can't find them on the web I will be happy to provide you with their phone number.

I'm intentionally re-opening an ancient thread to share what I have
learned recently. Upon researching several classic car, antique car,
sports car, specialty car, custom car, street rod insurors, I found that the
annual rates are within a few dollars of parity. So then, the deciding
factor becomes VALUE, which I define as the QUANTITY and/or QUALITY
one receives for each dollar spent.

It appeared to me that Hagerty offered the best VALUE because of (1)
minimal hassle in becoming enrolled; (2) the AGREED VALUE basis of
insurability; (3) the long experience and track record of the company
including McKeel Hagerty himself; (4) the professionalism and obvious
concern for the individual client by each employee with whom I spoke;
(5) their understanding that most cars are owned to be DRIVEN, not
trailered or garaged (big OOPS in my case!!!), meaning no unrealistic
mileage restrictions.

And most recently (6) the fact that our member Jim Frederick, owner of
a thriving insurance agency in Lutz FL, and owner of over 20 beautiful
restored early Z Cars, insures his fleet with Hagerty. If a successful
insurance professional with the same type of vehicles that I propose to
insure thinks that highly of a particular insuror, that is good enough
testimony for me, even without the first 5 items listed above.

BTW I tried to convince Jimbo to become licensed in the state of CT so
that we could benefit from his expertise and so that he could benefit
from advising and representing our Club members (and for whatever
commissions it might generate, of course! Gotta hold out that carrot!)

If the administrators of this thread think it better to move my post to
Vendor Attaboys and Disses, that would be okay. I only entered it here
as an addendum to a germane existing thread and as a service to our
members.

Great input, Rick ~ thank you!

No matter which year or model Z any of us drives, this applies to us. Even if you only race a trailered Z, some form of insurance demands your serious attention.

Heaven save us if we might own something as valuable and irreplaceable as the FIRST 240Z!

when i first bought my 260 i insured with great american, and for years had no problems, just cut a check each year and go. then they got greedy and really jumped me up, so i shopped around and went with j.c.taylor, as their price was in line with what i thought was fair.every year they ask what i want to insure the car for and i bump it up a little and the price has always been fair. i still pay under 100.00 a year, but you do have to have other cars as daily drivers and it needs to be indoors under lock and key when not in use. i'm happy with them, however, i never needed them yet!!!!! yet!! mike

I have to put in my 2 cents. I have had my Z insured with Hagerty for about 8 years now. I have slowly increased my agreed value as the car improved over the years. This past July, just after my car became car of the month, I was rear ended at a red light. I had my Z covered for 8000. Well the first quote came in at $8400. Of course, I was not liable for any of the incurred repair costs, so I picked the most exclusive auto restoration shop I could find in the area. Hagerty called me and said that they would work with me to get the car fixed right but the price for repairs must get below about $6000 for them to not have to total it and hand me the $8000. I lost several nights of sleep. Hagerty, got on the horn with the restoration shop I was using and went back and forth for a couple of sleepless days. They kept me in the loop as they haggled for me. They finally came to an agreement and my car was fixed right, at the shop I chose, and did not end up getting totalled. Mind you, I was only paying about $200/year for this amazing service. When the car was repaired, I immediately called Hagerty, thanked them, and raised my agreed value to $13000. Bottom line is if your car is worth about $10,000 on the open market. Set your agreed value for about 25% more to cover the gray area of "to total, or not to total" the car after an incident.

I HIGHLY reccommend Hagerty based on my first hand experience.

They also offer multi car discounts. I recently added my 1972 240Z for basic comprehensive coverage ($5000 agreed) as the car is being restored. The additional car added $16 to my premium BUT I got a $16 multi car discount. FREE Comprehensive for a second car! I was floored.

There are some restrictions but none that are unreasonable at all. Check them out for sure.

Hagerty. They are the best. Period.

I have all four of my Zs insured with them, including the '03 350Z. They will insure newer cars if they can be classified as "exotic" and limited use. Being in a legit car club verifies that.

The big think is "agreed value". Once you and Hagerty agree on the value of the car, that is the insured amount. Don't underestimate the value of your Z! Hagery will also let you know if they feel that your value may be under insured and have you consider upping the value. They stay on top of all market trends and make sure that you are protected. Hagerty also writes the liability policy for ZCCR.

The rates are great, the service is top notch. No appraisals, no age restrictions, no mileage restrictions, financing service if needed. I have been with them for years and highly recommend them.

My only hold up on going with antique car insurance is the clause that the car can not be driven to work. I occassionally will drive my Z to work. especially if I have to go in to the office on the weekend or at night after hours. I think I drove it to work during normal workday hours once this past year. My commute is about 15 miles, all highway with low traffic levels. The parking lot is out in the country, monitored by the facilities security team and there have never been any issues in the parking lot. I would hate to have something happen to the car on the one day I use it to go to work.

I can't speak to the work clause...but I've had Hagerty for a couple of years now...and so far so good. Although I do have to up the value next time around.

Cheers,
Colin

Alright, so somebody please post some contact information on these guys?

Phone, mailing address, eMail address would be great. It should be entered in our VENDORS RAVES AND GRIPES too, if you have first-hand experience with them.

I remember trying to contact JC TAYLOR last year when Dave opened this Thread, but wasn't able to reach them directly.

Hagerty Collector Car Insurance is in Traverse City, MI (right across
the lake from Green Bay, Frank). "Way up thayah."
1-800-922-4050
Mon-Fri 8:30 AM - 8:00 PM
Sat 8:30 - 4:00
Sun 12:00 - 4:00

Thanks Dave for reminding me of the multi-car discount, and thanks
John T for reminding me of the no age limitation (I guess that applies
on both ends of the spectrum, at least I hope so).

I was requested to provide photos of the cars, which was reasonable.
So I asked how many they would like, referred them to Phil's URL of
the Sept car show in Middletown, and invited them to print out and
enjoy all several hundred of them!
