Zeasons Greetings to all!
Is anyone familiar w/ the tax law which caps a vehicle's value at $500 if it is 25+ years old?
I have been enjoying this little $saver for a number of years now w/ the annual tax being around $15. Just received notice that the Town of Griswold has seen fit to 're-evaluate' lil red's worth @20,020! w/ an accompanying bill of $579.38! What the heck?! As I gather my shovels , rakes and various other implements of destruction for the march on town hall, does anyone have any thoughts on this? Bueller?
Z on!
Al

If your car has antique plates, the $500 cap is automatically applied. If you have Pssaenger plates you often have to prove your ride is old enough to apply for the deduction.

I seem to recall a previous conversation about the "total loss" issue (in an accident or fire) limiting you to claim $500 too, but the details of that have become foggy over the years.

I also seem to recall reading an article that the governor was rescinding that tax break in order to generate more revenue for "his" state.

But let's face it; Li'l Red is worth a whole lot more on today's market than $20k.

I've had antique plates for a number of years w/ no problems.
Now, where the heck did I put that flamethrower?

I felt your pain Al!

Back on July 5, 2016 I posted a similar topic in the forum. I never got the antique plates because back then they were labeled "Early American" so I decided to go for the "vanity" plate instead. For years, I was paying less than $20/year property tax. Then in 2016 I got hit by with a property tax bill of about $400. After questioning my town tax assessor, I was told to get proof from a certified mechanic that my car was in fact a classic antique car that is over 20 years old. I got a photo and letter from a mechanic friend which I presented to my town's tax assessor's office and the tax was finally reduced back down to around $14.

Here is a link explaining the CT Tax Assessment for Antique Cars (2011) which I believe is still in effect. Note the $500 max evaluation for our cars and you do not need antique plates.

 Wonderful.

Now, if you can only remember where you put the bayonet, your approach will be even more effective.
