Well, wow! That might have been the best 97-mile 5-hour fun run I've ever attended.

We met at Heavenly donuts, talked in the parking lot for about 30 minutes, then rolled out together in a Z caravan to Redding CT.

John Kish carefully (or luckily) selected some of the very best Z back-roads we could have asked for. Left, right, up, down, fast, slow, swoopy blind corners and hills so sharp, your hood hid what was coming up over the crest. Two-lane blacktops rolling and twisting thru the heavily wooded backroads; we drove alongside rivers and streams, past waterfalls and forests, over bridges so steep at the peak, another 10mph wold have put us airborne. We saw waterfalls, rivers, million-dollar old farmhouses and one-lane bridges. Traffic was light-to-nonexistent so we had the roads to ourselves most of the time. We even charged across a single-lane bridge altogether instead of waiting to see if anyone might be coming from the other side. It was one of the very best hours I've ever experienced in my Z. We got lots of waves and thumbs-up along the way. People even stopped and took pictures of us as we passed by. John choZe the best route to give many people a treat. The weather was excellent and the roads were dry. John couldn't have choZen a better time of year for a cruise; all the apple and cherry blossoms were in bloom, and the Amur Privet bushes were brilliant yellow for the only time of the year. It was a constant "Ooooo!" and "Ahhhhh!" ride thru the countryside. Some of the scenery was so spectacular, it caused our entire caravan to just stop dead in the road to gawk at it. No joke.

At the Umpawaug cemetery in Redding CT, we all spent a half-hour searching for Mary Travers' gravesite. We searched individually and in pairs up and down the 1.5 acre hillside. We found Dave Brubeck and gathered there briefly, then continued searching for Mary. FINALLY with the help of some excellent sleuthing (looking at a photo of her headstone on Find-a-Grave and where the background trees and roads were in relation to it), Mary was found.

We held a little non-religious service and discussion there, and took some pictures. We left some flowers, the hammer Mary always wished she'd had, and a magic dragon. We all had memories about Mary, Paul Stookey and Peter Yarrow.
I had been madly in love with Mary from age 13, but she was 12 years my senior and never knew I existed. Visiting her gravesite has been on my Bucket List for years, and I am grateful that I got to share it with such good Z friends.

Colin the Elder took the lead when we left, and led us thru some equally rewarding (altho somewhat faster) countryside. 15 minutes later we arrived at Bethel's Sycamore restaurant, where they had our table ready and were waiting to feed us.

After too much food and a great milkshake, I stumbled out to the cars where some of us said farewell. We broke into two groups headed in separate directions home. I used 1/2 tank of fuel and averaged only 17mpg, with all the double-clutching stop and go, hills and twisties. Best fuel I've spent all year.

John Kish has opened the 2021 Zeason with an excellent Fun Run, and we all look forward to reuniting again soon to head someplace else. It's not the destination which is important; the camaraderie and enjoying the ride is far more memorable.
And today we sure got our nickels' worth.

Thanks John, well done! I will post some pictures as soon as I can.

Frank
PS: Mary's headstone reads,
"MARY ALLIN TRAVERS
1936 ~ 2009
MOTHER
WIFE
FRIEND
ACTIVIST
VOICE OF A GENERATION THAT ECHOES THROUGH THE AGES"

Great day trip today!

Helping to fill Frank's "bucket" was a real joy for me as I'm sure it was for the rest of us that made it to the Umpawaug cemetery in Redding CT. Frank said it best in his post above. The scenery on this trip was better than I expected as much of this journey was new to me as well. This is one trip you want to take slow, not only to be safe, but to enjoy the beautiful countryside that you pass through. For those who couldn't make it, I would suggest making a pilgrimage to this spot. I've also included a couple of pics from our journey today. Great Fun!

If you have a fun run in mind that might include some neat places and nice roads that YOU are familiar with, please post it in the "Upcoming Events" topic on our forum. We would love to continue exploring our beautiful state with you!

Yesterday's drive really was a "fun run" - thanks to everyone for making it happen and for participating!

It was a gorgeous spring morning - perfect for a spirited ride through twisty, hilly backroads.

And as someone who had never experienced the Sycamore Drive-In, I thought that place was a blast too.

Hopefully this run was just the first in what will be many this season!

- Jim

Looks like you guys (and lady) had a special fun-run. Great photos! Truly wish I could have been there. Hoping to be able to sit long enough for the next fun-run.

OK, finally found away to upload some photos.
Frank checks the site map while the scouts were busy wandering around looking for Mary.
After some excellent detective work by John Kish and Jim Hagani the resting site of Mary Travers was found.
After Franks tribute to Mary Travers, we headed north to Bethel and the home of Saturday Cruise Nights...The Sycamore.
