Greetings from Hemmings Motor News. You may know us for our monthly magazines or online newsletter and classified ads, but since 2007, we’ve also hosted an annual concours d’elegance at various locations in Vermont and New York.

In 2019, the 13th annual Hemmings Motor News Concours d’Elegance will take place from September 13 – 15 in Lake George Village, New York. In honor of the Datsun 240Z’s 50th anniversary, we will be hosting a class dedicated to the following models:

1970-’73 240Zs
1974 260Zs
1975-‘78 280Z
1979-’83 280ZX

We’re actively seeking stock Z cars for the Sunday Concours d’Elegance, so if you or a member of your club has a car to enter, please send us details (such as any modifications from stock) as well as a few photographs.

While later cars and modified cars are excluded from participation in Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance, those not eligible for the actual concours are invited to participate in our Saturday Cruise-In Spectacular, open to all years and models, both stock and modified.

Additional details on the concours can be found at hemmings.com/events/concours.

Descriptions and photos can either be sent to my attention, at the email address below, or to our concours coordinator, Matt Litwin (mlitwin@hemmings.com).

We hope to hear from you soon and hope to see you in Lake George over the concours weekend.

Best regards,
Kurt Ernst

It's a ways off, but I'm definitely considering attending this event. Anyone else?

Yes. But staying overnight in Lake George, Lake Placid or Tupper Lake (big or little) has always been a regrettable nightmare for me. YMMV.

This event sounds very interesting I may attend.

Hey Frank, September should be a great time to be in the area. The crowd and kids are gone.

Not sure what YMMV is

There are some really nice back roads though the Berkshires we use to get there. The "park" for the event is just south of Fort Henry. We should try to get a gaggle of club members to go.

Your Mileage May Vary means others might have an immensely better time than I have had, trying to stay at any of those listed places.
Just really bad luck I guess; overbooked hotels who 'forgot' my reservations, false fire alarms in the middle of the night, loud party revelers keeping everyone awake at 03:00 for two nights, bugs in our rooms and in our food, breakfast restaurant which got closed-down by the Health Dept before our pancakes and eggs got served ("Everybody out! We're closed! Have a nice day, Bye!"), other restaurants which refused to serve breakfast (or anything which resembled breakfast) past 09:00, parking tickets regardless where we parked, clogged traffic in every direction, overcrowded streets, parks, 'beaches' and tourist attractions, (2-hr wait for a parasail flight), angry, over-worked cops, ridiculous prices for everything you actually needed, etc. I won't go back, thanks.

Besides, if I can find a safe place to store my Z in Germany this May, I might leave it there and return in September for the 500-mile trip around Scotland 15-20Sep! I would much rather visit Scotland in the fall than the Adirondacs.

Flash forward to August.

I had a live sighting of Rick Morgan and asked him if he was interested in taking #13 up there and he said he was. I wrote to the HMN staff and asked them if they would sponsor his trip there (motel & entry fees) if he brought them the very first 240Z manufactured for sale in the USA; the flagship of all the landslide sales which were to follow after #13 reached our shore.

They didn't write back.

I wrote again ystrdy and today got an apology that my message had been overlooked, that the "240Z class is full (?) and they would not have been able to sponsor him anyway".

Too bad; this might have cost them $500 to show America's first Datsun 240Z in original condition, just as it actually turns 50, at the country's very-first actual 240z Concours d'Elegance. It wouldn't even have to be a judged car; they should have wanted it there simply as the grandfather the rest of the cars came from. It is, after all, the original template for every Z car which followed.

Every Z owner would have loved to go home bragging that they saw the very first Datsun 240z made for sale in the USA as it actually turned 50 years old.

Colin and I will be there. 2483 is entered in the Concours on the Sunday. I hope we can get a photo with John's car, two Classic Motorsport Magazine cars together.
See you chaps at the big show.
We will also be at the Lime Rock Historics, Labor Day Weekend.

Evy and I had a great time at this event. Aside from the great program organized by Hemmings, it was good getting together with Colin and his wife, John T, Tom Bork and Frank T and meeting many new friends at this beautiful location. I took this little snapshot of Colin prepping his Z while discussing the virtues of Z ownership with Rod who actually won a Concours trophy for his awesome '68 Toyota FJ Cruiser.

I sure envy that 10,000foot-long hauler in the background.
