Talking to several others who attended (I didn't), it was mentioned that #13 was placed surpriZingly far from the heart of attention, out in the far back 40. It was mentioned that the oppressive heat that day made people far less likely to hike out to the end of the field to find #13 (if they even knew it was out there), so that might (might) have played a strong role in the voting.

They all remember seeing #13 outside the hotel entrance, however, and said the car drew some constant attention there.

But that was not the time for judging.

Rick said when he arrived with the car, they directed him into the field. He told them what car he had, but they insisted he park out there.

I suspect this was the difference btwn entering the car to be formally judged, or letting it be subject to peoples' choice. A formal judge would certainly have applauded #13's significance and provenance, but 'the people' might not have wanted to hike out into the stifling field to find it?

Matters not. I will always salute this car for what it is, and be grateful to Rick Morgan for preserving it over the past decades.

And I'm immensely proud that OUR CLUB has this car on our rolls.

Frank T

I hope I wasn't the cause of this misunderstanding. Let me explain.

There were TWO DIFFERENT categories of judging which could be entered,
with a separate entry fee for each.

The first was the "judged" category, which I would most simply describe
as the cars in nearly "concours" condition. Since 13 is not a "restoration
to better than new" car, we did not enter that competition. You should
have seen some of those cars, though, they were STUNNING! You know,
the kind you bring in in an enclosed trailer and then start polishing be-
cause a bug landed on it, or picking around among the engine crevices
with a Q-tip because you noticed a speck of dirt that wasn't there before.

The second was the "Peoples Choice" category, which we did enter. I'm
not sure how these were arranged on the Show lawn, if at all. Each such
car was given a page with the entry number and certain information on
it, much like what we have at our show, to put under the windshield wiper
for people to see the entry number if that car would be their choice.
It may be that all "Peoples Choice" entries were randomly interspersed
among all the other 400+/- cars on the field, in no particular order other
than the sequence of actual arrival at the site on the morning of the show.

I have NO hard feelings against any of the ZCCA officers.
In fact, many of them (possibly all) became our friends during the con-
vention. If you could have seen the magnitude and complexity of this
entire enterprise, not just the Show, you would have been AMAZED at the
obvious degree of planning and hard work that had gone into it, and which
continued at the venue for the duration. I think my disappointment was
that after all the hoopla surrounding Lucky 13's coming to the Anniversary
Event, she was not accorded a space "up front" in the show among the
other significant cars in attendance, some of which were not even Z's.

With so many nice cars in attendance, over 400 I think, I don't know how
anyone could walk through rows and rows of cars for hours, looking at
them, assessing them, and talking to their owners, and then vote intel-
ligently. Unless one had a memory like a digital camera or a computer,
I don't see how one could remember what he/she saw two or more hours
ago when eventually casting a vote.

Since the entries are all submitted BEFORE the Convention, the number of
cars in each class (S30, S130, Z31, etc) is known beforehand. Therefore
it would be my suggestion to allocate a particular section of the field for
each group, so at least all the 240/260/280s could be grouped together,
and so on. That way all the cars competing against one another would
be grouped together for Peoples Choice voters to visit, revisit and visit
again category-by-category if they feel the need.

I probably have a few more suggestions; I will share them as they
come to mind. But as I said, no hard feelings against anybody except
maybe the volunteers who stationed us out on the perimeter without
bothering to hear what we had to say.

All in all we had a really GREAT time, and I would strongly encourage
everybody to save up their vacation time (or sick leave if it comes to
that!) so you can make it to Savannah with us next year.
