I have planned our first "Fun Run" for the 2021 season. It will begin at the Heavenly Donut on Rt 34 in Derby CT at 10AM this coming Saturday , April 17th. The route is on mostly back scenic roads with our first stop at a picturesque cemetery in Redding CT, where Mary Travers of Peter Paul and Mary fame is buried. From there we head north a short distance to a 50's style drive inn called the Sycamore in Bethel CT. We can stop and rest there and grab a bite to eat if you desire. From there we head back to the Heavely Donut in Derby. Total distance is 55 miles.

Rain Date is Sunday April 17th, same time.

Please click on the link below for route details, print or download to your smart phone.

I encourage you to check this post frequently should there be any changes and also to post suggested fun runs that YOU would like to take.

I look forward to meeting with you Saturday to kick off our Zeason!

Regards,

John Kish

Outstanding choice for a Zeason opener, John! I loved PP&M as a teenager and have long intended to visit Mary's grave here in Redding CT. Maybe I'll bring some flowers or a little hammer?

I've also been to the Sycamore and had some great cheeZe dogs and milkshakes, 1950s style. I think their front parking lot can accompany about 50 Zs. The back-roads route looks perfect for Z cars.

Nobody's "too young" to remember Peter, Paul and Mary:

Count me in, and THANKS for doing this.

John,

I appreciate your call this afternoon.
Unfortunately I am suffereing with a bout of sciata in my RIGHT leg and can't sit in a car for that long. I have an appointment with a Accupuncturist shortly and hopefully my problem will be solved after a few visits.

I had a similar problem in the other leg 15 years ago. We had booked a cruise through the Panama Canal that could not be cancelled at that late date so we went. One of the programs offered in the lecture series was a program titled Chinese Nutrition, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Chinese Accupuncture. The lectures were presented by a Dr. Rida Wang who had studied well beyond her MD. I signed up for the consult and then three treatment sessions for my LEFT leg. I have had no trouble since. The treatments were absolutely painless!

Hopefully I will be able to sit in a Z for extended fun-runs in the future.

Did I forget to mention...Dr. Wang is drop dead gorgous!

Enjoy the fun-run,

Alan

I spoke with the Sycamore 1950s restaurant to make sure they are dine-in and curb service (they are). They asked how many people we expect to bring along? They have a 75 seat indoor capacity but are limiting that to about 30 seats for covid safety spacing. They also have routine customers during the weekend, so they want to plan around us. Please let us know if you intend to drive with us on this backwoods Connecticut Memory Tour of the 1950s and '60s, so we can help the Sycamore folks provide adequate seating and waitstaff to keep us all happy. Thanks!

I will try my best to make this but for me it will be the weather that would keep me away. Hopefully my town has put the ice mix away for the year we are forecast for snow on Friday.

It will be good to go on a "Backwoods Connecticut Memory Tour of the 1950s and '60s" I know Frank is bringing his "Hammer", didn't they also sing "Puff the magic dragon?" :P

I searched high and low for a dragon. No joy.
Gotta settle for a hammer.
And flowers.
And maybe a jet plane.

SNOW???! :(
C'mon, you missed April Fool's Day by two weeks.

Oh PUFF! My Z is having a rear end noise problem that Vinny needs to take a look at, yes it's a growling noise under moderate acceleration.
So the plan will be to meet up at Umpawaug or a few miles before that, I'll be in "Bluebird".
Hoping for some warmer temps, no heat or top in the TR.

It looks like we are getting a good group together! :D So far the weather forecast for Saturday is partly to mostly cloudy, high of 57F. No rain forecasted. Please check this forum late Friday after 8PM for any last minute updates.

Covid Notes:
Heavenly Donuts is serving customers from only their drive up window if you desire a quick cup of Jo and/or breakfast. There is also the Valley Diner and a McDonald's next door.

Please remember to bring masks should we get together outside or if you plan to enter the Sycamore Drive In.

Can't wait to ZEEE you folks!

Sounds like Umpawaug Cemetery will be a nice place to "Take Five"....
Another great musician rests there, Dave Brubeck.

I seem to remember 'Take 5' from 1959, altho most folks place it a year or two later :?:

Colin, I'll do a 60 second graveside presentation on Mary if you'll do one on Dave B?
Frank

WoW Dave Brubeck is there as well, I had his son Michael as a room mate in high school.
He lived in Ridgefield I believe, it was a long time ago.

Not looking good for me as we have around 4" of snow so far and it's still coming down.
